Scope and Contents

The Tomas Herran papers contain correspondence, cables, letter books, and related material dealing primarily with Colombian-U.S. relations in the period leading up to and just after the negotiation of the Hay-Herran Treaty (1903). The documents also concern Herran's duties as minister to the United States. Printed material deals largely with the Panama Canal and the Hay-Herran Treaty. Scope and Contents The Thomas Dodd, Jr. Papers contain biographical materials, speeches, chronological files, photographs, and newspaper clippings that detail the life of Thomas Dodd Jr. (b. 1935), U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay from 1993 to 1997 and U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica from 1997 to 2001. Of great importance are the chronological files which essentially serve as personal diaries maintained by Dodd Jr. to record his daily diplomatic experiences. Drake Papers are primarily comprised of correspondence by officials of the Panama Railroad Company (mostly dating from 1905 through 1927), and by notable Panamanian politicians and government ministers (total of 62 folders). A number of the manuscripts deal with the employment of Indian laborers from the Jesuit 'reductions' on the fortification of the ports of Buenos Aires; others touch on the incursions of hostile Indians against the reductions. A major emphasis of the collection, however, is on the continuing struggle between the Jesuits and the antagonistic representatives of the Church...
