Collection-level Scope and Content Note

From the Collection:

The Paraguayan Jesuits Collection consists of 20 manuscript and 4 printed documents ranging in date from 1639 to about 1744. A number of the manuscripts deal with the employment of Indian laborers from the Jesuit 'reductions' on the fortification of the ports of Buenos Aires; others touch on the incursions of hostile Indians against the reductions. A major emphasis of the collection, however, is on the continuing struggle between the Jesuits and the antagonistic representatives of the Church and the Spanish government.

There are manuscripts giving detailed responses to the anti-Jesuit memorials of Diego de Villalon (envoy to Spain of Archbishop Bernardino de Cardenas) in the 1650's; rebutting the charges brought by Martin de Barua in the 1730's; and, finally, a very lengthy 'examen' of the manifesto written by the Redemptorist Miguel de Vargas Machuca, dating from about 1740 and providing in its course a rather full survey of the Jesuits' difficulties with their ecclesiastical and governmental opponents. A brief survey of the available histories indicates that previous historians may not have been aware of all but two of the documents.

Container Summary

9 typeset sheets, bound, consisting of a letter from Father Geronimo Herran, S.J., "chaplain" of the mission troops, to Don Joseph de Armendariz, the Marques de Castelfuerte and Viceroy of Peru, two brief letters from Castelfuerte to Herran and a decree from the Viceroy. Herran's letter, dated 15 March, 1732, regards the expulsion from Asuncion of the Jesuits and of Don Ignacio de Soroeta, the appointed Governor of Paraguay, by the Comuneros. Castelfuerte's letters and decree (June 1732) give orders that Herran is to supply Indian troops to the newly appointed Governor of Paraguay, Don Manuel Agustin de Ruyloba Calderon. At the time of these letters, Ruyloba Calderon had just been appointed and was still in Lima consulting with Castelfuerte before leaving to Buenos Aires and then going on to take Asuncion by force. The documents were typeset in Spain some time after the original writing, and the date on the front page is 20 February, 1733. A handwritten copy of Castelfuerte's decree, which is longer and more detailed, can be found in Folder 20.
