Letterpress Copy Books (Outgoing Correspondence) (Boxes 1-8) , 1888-1904
Scope and Contents
These books contain copies of outgoing letters and telegrams written by University Presidents arranged chronologically. From 1891 onward, some of the letters are typed. The copies were made directly from the original letters using a transfer process.
The paper used in the letterpress books is very thin and must be handled with care; the ink is uneven in places making the contents, at times, difficult to read. Each volume begins with an alphabetical name index of people to whom the letters were written. Note that letters relating to the Medical and Law Schools are indexed under the name of administrators and faculty, not the name of the school (i.e. those seeking letters relating to the Medical School during the deanship of George L. Maugruder should look under “Magruder” in the index) and that the indexing choices can be idiosyncratic in other ways, e.g., a letter addressed to the President and Faculty of the University of Texas is indexed under “P” for President.
