Warwick Deeping, 1933 - 1942

Scope and Contents

Four letters in the hand of English writer Warwick Deeping. Three of them, dated between 1933 and 1942, are addressed to a “Dear Newman” and pertain largely to personal matters, including one alluding to a conflict regarding his friend’s forthcoming book. The fourth letter is undated and addressed simply “Dear old man”, but may also have been intended for Newman.

Found in Notes:  Warwick Deeping (1877-1950) was an English novelist and short story writer best known for his novels depicting the vicissitudes of 20th-century life after the First World War, including Sorrell and Son (1925).

Scope and Contents A collection of 6 items related to English actor Charles Kean. One complete letter in his hand, dated 1860 and addressed to a “Mr Millward” has a portrait of Kean (apparently clipped from a newspaper) glued to it, and is accompanied by two signatures (themselves removed from two other letters and glued together), a small printed photograph, and a short handwritten biography. Each of the items shows evidence of adhesive on the back, indicating that they may have once been in a scrapbook,...

Found in Notes:  One complete letter in his hand, dated 1860 and addressed to a “Mr Millward” has a portrait of Kean (apparently clipped from a newspaper) glued to it, and is accompanied by two signatures (themselves removed from two other letters and glued together), a small printed photograph, and a short handwritten biography. Each of the items shows evidence of adhesive on the back, indicating that they may have once been in a scrapbook, commonplace book, or similar.

Found in Notes:  Most of the letters congratulate Rogers for his work with radio or his successes in court cases. 2 letters refer to short wave communication. Also includes 6 programs from commencement at Georgetown University in June 1919, at which Rogers was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.), and 4 copies of the proclamation made when the degree was granted.
