Collection-level Scope and Content Note The Paraguayan Jesuits Collection consists of 20 manuscript and 4 printed documents ranging in date from 1639 to about 1744. A number of the manuscripts deal with the employment of Indian laborers from the Jesuit 'reductions' on the fortification of the ports of Buenos Aires; others touch on the incursions of hostile Indians against the reductions. A major emphasis of the collection, however, is on the continuing struggle between the Jesuits and the antagonistic representatives of the Church...

Found in Notes:  A major emphasis of the collection, however, is on the continuing struggle between the Jesuits and the antagonistic representatives of the Church and the Spanish government.

There are manuscripts giving detailed responses to the anti-Jesuit memorials of Diego de Villalon (envoy to Spain of Archbishop Bernardino de Cardenas) in the 1650's; rebutting the charges brought by Martin de Barua in the 1730's; and, finally, a very lengthy 'examen' of the manifesto written by the Redemptorist Miguel de Vargas Machuca, dating from about 1740 and providing in its course a rather full survey of the Jesuits' difficulties with their ecclesiastical and governmental opponents.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin - Francoise Raphael Collection

The Raphael - Teilhard de Chardin Collection consists of thirty-seven letters, a manuscript drawing, two typed manuscripts, and a number of offprints on evolution and anthropology, all from the collection of Mrs. Francoise Raphael, an old friend of Teilhard from his early days in China. There is also a folder of black-and-white photographs.

Found in Notes:  In a number of letters, Teilhard describes his thoughts on a new, broader "Science of Man" to replace anthropology; one can also find expressions of his disappointment with the Church's view of his philosophy.

Thomas Merton - Edward Rice Collection

This collection contains thirteen letters of the correspondence between the Trappist monk Thomas Merton (1915-1968) and the writer, artist, and photographer Edward Rice (1918- ), written between the years 1959-1967.

Found in Notes:  When Merton made the decision to enter the Catholic Church in 1938, it was Rice that Merton asked to act as his godfather.

Leopoldo Duran Papers

Scope and Contents The collection primarily contains correspondence from Graham Greene to Leopoldo Duran (1964-1990). It also includes correspondence from Vivien Greene, Hugh Greene (brother) and Elizabeth Dennys (sister). Of note is a common place book containing autograph entries by Greene dating from the late 1970s. Philip Cardella, SJ Papers

The papers in this collection cover a wide variety of places and events--not all clear in their relationship to Cardella. Most are in Spanish (letters to and from Central America as well as sermons for his New York community). There are seven folders of correpondence, received and sent, with some undated drafts of letters; four folders of material for and about the Spanish community in NYC; and small amounts of teaching material, legal documents and opinions, and inscription drafts.

Found in Notes:  He attempted to build a Spanish Church for them, went to Mexico to raise money for it, but did not get the task accomplished.

John Briley Walsh Papers

Scope and Contents The John Briley Walsh Papers date almost entirely from his student days at Georgetown and Woodstock College. They primarily consist of class material in the form of loose notes and notebooks, very few of which are dated (folders 3-44). In addition to documenting his academic training, the papers also contain items relating to his spiritual formation at Woodstock (folders 45-52). Also present, a fragment of correspondence from Bernard M. Lochboehler, a Jesuit writing from the Philippines...

Charles H. Fulmer, SJ papers

Collection-level Scope and Content Note

Fulmer (1833-1880) received the usual Jesuit education, was ordained in 1861, and spent most of his career teaching although some years were passed in mission work and he also did parish work for the last two years of his life. Two notebooks, each of some 360 pages, bound in boards, containing poems, comprise the collection. The majority of the poems are copied, but there are apparently a few originals.

Dates: 1849-1863
Found in Notes:  He was assinged in 1878 to St. Mary's Church in Boston, where he died in 1880.
