Pasted on the title page is note in ink by Emerson reading "This is a fragment from a 10,000 word rather long romantic tale, laid in the region of the Rio Dulce in Guatemala. E. E." The text appears to be a portion of Section XIV and Sections XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, and XIX.
