Robert O'Donnell Hinckley was born in Washington, D.C. on 27 May 1894, the son of Robert and Eleanora O'Donnell Hinckley. He was admitted to the Delaware bar, after graduating from Columbia Law Schoolo in 1916, and subsequently served as assistant to the U.S. District Attorney.
