Scope and Contents

Robert O'Donnell Hinckley was born in Washington, D.C. on 27 May 1894, the son of Robert and Eleanora O'Donnell Hinckley. He was admitted to the Delaware bar, after graduating from Columbia Law Schoolo in 1916, and subsequently served as assistant to the U.S. District Attorney. In 1918, he received a commission in the United States Navy. In 1923, after brief employment with an oil company, Robert Hinckley received an appointment to the foreign service. He served in Bucharest from 1923 - 1925; Mexico from 1925 - 1926; and Panama from 1926 until his retirement from the service in 1929. He died on 12 July 1960. The series consists primarily of correspondence addressed to Robert O'Donnell Hinckley, including a letter from Vice-Admiral John D. MAcDonald in support of Robert's application to the foreign service. Also included in the series is a diary/journal kept by Robert Hinckley while traveling through the Orient between 1919 - 1920.
