International Iranian Students Protest Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of four flyers promoting protests against the Iranian government and the Shah (Mohammad Reza Pahlavi) in the 1960s and 1970s. Two of the documents are from Northern California and the other two are from France.
The following descriptions were produced by Bolerium Books:
1) A hungry nation does not need a 2500 year celebration!... Join us in opposing it [handbill]. n.p.:
Iranian Students Association in the USA, [1971]. 8.5x14 inch handbill, horizontal fold crease,
mathematical notations on the blank verso, along with a date. Calls for protests in San Francisco and
Washington DC to condemn the celebration of the 2500th anniversary of the monarchy in Iran.
2) Iranian Students Association - Northern California [handbill]. Berkeley: ISA, [1964]. 8.5x11 inch
mimeographed handbill, part of last line ("the principle of freedom and justice is stiffed") is over the
edge. (The final word has a correction on both examples we have seen, but appears to have originally
been "stiffened" and changed to "stiffed"). A name and campus address are penned on the blank verso.
An unusual leaflet distributed in the context of the Free Speech Movement at UC Berkeley, discussing
how the Iranian government had attacked student protesters in 1961, only for the University of
California to give the Shah an honorary degree in 1964. "The reason we offer this story is to ask you a
question: What manner of people are your Board of Regents?"
3 and 4) Confederation des Etudiants Iraniens (Union Nationale). (Handbill, a canvassing for letter-writers
to the Iranian Embassy in Paris to protest detentions): La Situation des Prisonniers Politiques en
Iran [2 parts, a leaf of mimeo'd text plus a professionally printed card]. Paris: the Confederation
des Etudiants Iraniens (Union Nationale), n.d., 1970s. Two original pieces: a text-leaf on a mildly
acidic standard leaf bearing about 300 words, situation outlined and six currently incarcerated figures
named, plus names of persons arrested earlier -plus- a light cardstock piece - on one side how to
address one's written protest, the other side a precis of issues to mention. This card is in very good
clean condition, while the 11x8.5 inch leaf bears a transverse fold-line, toning, and some typing errors.
As issued, complete and legible in the French language. Handbill.
