1.6 Membership, Final Vows, 1812-1951

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of the documents signed by each member of the Maryland Province upon taking his final vows and becoming a member of the Society of Jesus. Some of these members took only the simple vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience; others took the additional fourth vow of fealty to the Pope, enabling them to become fully professed. Each document is signed by the member taking the vows, records the name of the Provincial who accepted the vows, and includes the date and place that the profession was celebrated. The earliest documents date from just before the foundation of the Mission of the American Federation,, and include the years immediately after the separation of the Maryland Province from New York, August 15, 1947. They are arranged in alphabetical order by member surname . There also is a list of the members included in this subseries (compiled September 20, 1951) and fragments of a bound volume that recorded the vows taken by members of the New York Mission within the Canadian Province from January 1, 1861 through January 7, 1887.
