Andre Hellegers Research Files, 1970s, 1999

 File — Box: 4, Folder: 46

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The series contains research files on the history of bioethics, the Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE), and Andre Hellegers collected and created by Warren T. Reich. They were assembled for a variety of publications, including articles on the history of the word “bioethics” and the foundations of the KIE.

The series includes correspondence with a number of individuals who contributed to the early development of the field of bioethics, including Alfred R. Jonsen, Dan Callahan, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Sargent Shriver, and Van Rensselaer Potter.

The series contains research on the life of Andre Hellegers that was conducted by Reich for a potential book (in addition to the research conducted on the KIE and the origins of the word bioethics). It includes notes on interviews with a number of individuals who knew Hellegers, including his wife, Charlotte, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Those interviews, along with an interview with John Collins Harvey, were recorded on microcassette tapes that are included as part of the collection. There are copies of original documents from the Kennedy Foundation Archives and the Hellegers papers held by the Booth Family Center for Special Collections at Georgetown University.
