Scope and Contents

The collection primarily deals with family-related matters of the Eid, Brown, and Shoemaker families. The materials relate to the history of the 19th century Washington D.C. area, specifically Tenleytown, Friendship Heights, and west Chevy Chase, Maryland. See the External Documents section below for a detailed inventory to the collection.

The Eid family materials includes deeds, plats, bills of exchange, and indentures from the 1830s to the 1860s. It also includes an undated bill of sale for an enslaved woman. Other materials include correspondence regarding a financial transaction between the Eid family and the Union Army in the 1860s, materials on the Eldbrook Methodist Church, and a scrapbook on the D.C. chapter of the Knights of Pythias (1900-1905).

The Shoemaker family materials document local D.C. history and includes a scrapbook on the Friendship Heights Citizens Committee (1925-1935).

The collection also includes materials related to the D.C. Kiwanis Club and the Claudia Woodward D.C. public School (1916-1919).

Materials in this collection contain references to slavery, slaveholding, and enslaved individuals.
