Biographical Note

Jozsef Zrinyi (1919-1991) was born in Szemcséd, Hungary, to Istvan (1894-1945) and Erzsébet Visi Zrinyi (1898-1991) alongside brother Miklós (1926-1979). He attended Pius College in Pécs (1929-1937) before entering the Society of Jesus in Budapest (1937-1940). He then had his philosophy in Kassa (1940-1943, now Košice, Slovakia); undertook his regency at Szatmárnémeti (August-October 1943, now Satu Mare, Romania) and Kalocsa (August-October 1944); and served as assistant editor of A Sziv in Budapest (November 1943-July 1944). Following the siege of Budapest (November 1944-March 1945), he returned to Szatmárnémeti to finish his regency (April-November 1945).

Zrinyi completed theological studies at St. Aloysius College (Szeged, Hungary, 1945-1947) and at the Canisianum (Maastricht, Netherlands, 1947-1949), where he was ordained in 1948. His tertianship took place in Wepion (Belgium, 1949-1950) and, after a brief period in Bad Godesburg (West Germany, July-October 1950), he was assigned as assistant pastor to a Hungarian church in Montreal (1950-1953) where he also completed an MA in Industrial Relations at the University of Montreal (1951-1953). Beginning in the fall of 1953 Zrinyi led retreats and missions to Hungarian communities across the US and Canada, based in Buffalo until 1956 and later in Cleveland until 1958.

He then pursued doctoral studies in economics at Georgetown University (1958-1962), earning his PhD in 1962, and taught economics courses there such as the History of Economic Analysis, Money & Income, Macroeconomic Theory, and Principles of Economics, while also directing the Salzburg and Trier study abroad programs (1961-1989). Zrinyi held the title of professor emeritus following his retirement in 1989 and died at Georgetown in 1991.
