George Gordon Henderson (1917-1987) was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, to Thomas Gordon (1889-1975) and Leatha Mae Might (1899-1984) and raised in Baltimore alongside his nine younger siblings. After attending St. Rita’s Grammar School, Dundalk, and graduating from Loyola High School (1935), he entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson in 1935 where he completed his novitiate and juniorate (1935-1939). He then began his philosophical studies at Inisfada (New York, 1940) before continuing them at Woodstock College (1941-1942). Between 1943 and 1944 he was teaching classical languages at St. Joseph’s High School (Philadelphia), after which he had his theology at Weston College (1945-1947) and Woodstock (1948-1949, ordained 1948) and his tertianship at Auriesville (1950). During this time he also worked on graduate studies at Boston College, receiving an MA and an MEd in 1945 and 1949, respectively.
