Yemeni Haggadah Manuscript
Scope and Contents
A bound manuscript on paper of the 18th or 19th century containing a Passover Haggadah of the Yemeni rite, with liturgy in Hebrew and instruction in Judeo-Arabic. The text is somewhat condensed, and contains a high number of abbreviations in the Hebrew. Catchwords are present throughout, including on the final page, suggesting that the volume may be incomplete -- though the last prayer recorded here, the Nishmat, is usually found at the conclusion of the Passover seder or ceremonial meal.
Text in black ink with decoration and rubrication in red, including a highly decorative border at the beginning. The paper quality is mixed and there is significant staining and other damage throughout, though legibility is not compromised. Repairs have been done, most prominently on the first leaf, likely at the time of binding. 20th century quarter binding with gold tooling decoration on the front and an added bookmark. Title in gold on a red spine label. Evidence of an adhesive label on the rear cover.
