The Lawrence C. McHugh, SJ Papers include published and unpublished writings, some of which were adapted into TV/radio programs, as well as material related to the 1950 Georgetown University pilgrimage to Europe (including Rome) and the 1956-1957 Georgetown-at-Fribourg study abroad program.
The Lawrence C. McHugh, SJ Papers are on deposit at Georgetown University and are the property of the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus. As stewards of the Archives, the Georgetown University Library’s Booth Family Center for Special Collections is responsible for managing access to the material based on policies set forth by the USA East Province. Guidelines:
1. All Archives materials dated or bearing solely on events occurring before January 1, 1940, shall be open for review unless otherwise restricted, subject to Library policies and procedures.
2. All unpublished Archives materials dated or bearing solely on events occurring on or after January 1, 1940, shall be open for review upon request subject to a decision by the Provincial or someone designated by the Provincial.
3. Researchers may quote from the materials.
4. Researchers may take their own photographs of the material for scholarly and research purposes. Allowing photographs is not an authorization to publish or to deposit the material in another library or archive.
5. Written permission from the USA East Province is required for the publication of substantive portions of any material or publication-quality reproductions of any material.
6. Material not yet processed is not available to researchers; permission will not be granted to access any unprocessed material.
7. Audiovisual, microfilm and other material in the Archives, the original of which is held in another archive, may be consulted and transcribed only. Written permission from the archive holding the original material is required for any duplication, reproduction, or publication of that material.
8. Use the Permission Request Form to request permission (i) to access any restricted processed material or (ii) to publish reproductions or quote substantive portions of the material. Send the completed form by email to the Booth Family Center for Special Collections (speccoll@georgetown.edu).

Fr. Lawrence C. McHugh (1909-1979) was born in Winchendon, Massachusetts to parents Charles A. (1871-1935) and Mary Josephine Morlock McHugh (1883-1981, m. 1905) alongside sister Mary Josephine (1905-1998). The family moved to Washington DC, in 1911 where his siblings Charles Xavier (1919-1972) and Emily T. were also born (1923-2005). They lived briefly in Camden, New Jersey, before returning to Washington, DC, where Lawrence went to Gonzaga College High School (1923-1927). After graduation he entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson (Poughkeepsie, 1927-1931) and completed his philosophy studies at Woodstock (1932-1934). He spent one year at Georgetown for his regency (1935), preparing to teach seismology or astronomy, but was then transferred to St. Joseph’s College to teach Classics (1936-1937). Between 1938 and 1941 he studied theology at Woodstock College and was ordained in 1940.
Fr. McHugh’s tertianship was spent at St. Robert’s Hall (Pomfret, Connecticut, 1941-1942) before being stationed at the lay retreat center at Manresa-on-Severn (Annapolis, 1943). From 1944 to 1958 he was at Georgetown University in a wide variety of teaching, administrative, and moderator positions including director of the Veterans’ Guidance Center (1946-1949), professor of philosophy/ethics (1949-1956), regent of the School of Nursing (1953-1954), and part of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, study abroad program (1956-1957). Next Fr. McHugh was at Campion House, New York, writing for America and The Catholic Mind (1959-1962) before returning to Georgetown as a professor of philosophy and theology (1963-1971). After two years at the Loyola-on-Potomac retreat (Faulkner, Maryland, 1972-1973), he returned to Georgetown as a professor and then professor emeritus of theology (1974-1979). Fr. McHugh died in Washington, DC, in 1979.
