The Thomas J. Murray, SJ Papers contain material related to his position as headmaster of Ateneo de Zamboanga in the Philippines (1928-1935) and milestones in his spiritual life such as his ordination, final vows, and silver and golden jubilees. Also included is a folder of genealogical research on his mother's family, the Welshes/Welches.
The Thomas J. Murray, SJ Papers are on deposit at Georgetown University and are the property of the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus. As stewards of the Archives, the Georgetown University Library’s Booth Family Center for Special Collections is responsible for managing access to the material based on policies set forth by the USA East Province. Guidelines:
1. All Archives materials dated or bearing solely on events occurring before January 1, 1940, shall be open for review unless otherwise restricted, subject to Library policies and procedures.
2. All unpublished Archives materials dated or bearing solely on events occurring on or after January 1, 1940, shall be open for review upon request subject to a decision by the Provincial or someone designated by the Provincial.
3. Researchers may quote from the materials.
4. Researchers may take their own photographs of the material for scholarly and research purposes. Allowing photographs is not an authorization to publish or to deposit the material in another library or archive.
5. Written permission from the USA East Province is required for the publication of substantive portions of any material or publication-quality reproductions of any material.
6. Material not yet processed is not available to researchers; permission will not be granted to access any unprocessed material.
7. Audiovisual, microfilm and other material in the Archives, the original of which is held in another archive, may be consulted and transcribed only. Written permission from the archive holding the original material is required for any duplication, reproduction, or publication of that material.
8. Use the Permission Request Form to request permission (i) to access any restricted processed material or (ii) to publish reproductions or quote substantive portions of the material. Send the completed form by email to the Booth Family Center for Special Collections (speccoll@georgetown.edu).

Fr. Thomas J. Murray was born in Philadelphia to parents Michael J. (1847-1905) and Margaret Welsh Murray (1849-1908) alongside siblings Margaret (1871-1942), Kathryn G. (1875-1935), Mary A. (1876-1985), Edward M. (1878-1935), Alice R. (1882-1955), and Eleanor T. (d. 1980). Between 1903 and 1907 he went to St. Joseph’s High School and College (Philadelphia) before working for the auditing department of the Pennsylvania Railroad (1907-1910). Fr. Murray entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson (Poughkeepsie, 1910-1914), completed his philosophy at Woodstock (1915-1917), and taught at the College of the Holy Cross (Worcester, 1918-1921) before studying theology at Colegio de San Francisco Javier, Oña, Burgos, Spain (1922-1923). Upon his return to the US, he continued theology studies at Woodstock College (1924-1925) and was ordained in 1924.
From 1926 to 1927 he taught at Loyola College (Baltimore) and in 1928 did his tertianship at St. Andrew-on-Hudson. Next Fr. Murray was stationed in the Philippines as headmaster of Ateneo de Zamboanga, Mindanao, and rector of the Zamboanga Cathedral (1928-1935), taking his final vows in 1929. After this period he came back to the US and was briefly at St. Joseph’s Church (Philadelphia, 1936) and the Loyola House of Retreats (Morristown, New Jersey, 1937) before becoming dean of the Fordham University School of Business (1938-1941). Continuing in administrative positions, Fr. Murray was acting dean for the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service (1942-1950) and rector of Loyola College (Baltimore, 1950-1955). From 1956 to 1964 he was again at St. Joseph’s High School and St. Joseph’s Church in Philadelphia before returning to Georgetown (1965-1970). Fr. Murray died in 1970.
