William C. Repetti, SJ (1884-1966) was born in Washington, DC, to Alice G. Williams (1852-1920) and George R. Repetti (1850-1934) alongside siblings John J. (1875-1932), George W. (1893-1956), and Rita Edna (1878-1957). After completing his early schooling at St. Cecilia's, he attended Gonzaga College (1895-1902) where he received a BA. Fr. Repetti then studied at the Corcoran Scientific School of Columbia College, now known as George Washington University, graduating with a BS (1907). He entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson (Poughkeepsie), where he completed his noviceship and juniorate (1907-1910) and took his first vows (1909). He next taught mathematics and physics at St. Canisius High School (Buffalo, 1910-1911), took his philosophy at Woodstock (1911-1914), and taught mathematics and physics at Fordham University (1914-1918). His theology was at Woodstock (1918-1922), where he was also ordained (1921).
Completing his tertianship at St. Andrew-on-Hudson (1922-1923), he became minister there (1923-1925) and took his final vows (1924). Fr. Repetti then completed studies in seismology at Saint Louis University (1926-1928), receiving a PhD from Macelwaine's School of Geophysics. Next he assisted the Philippine Weather Bureau at the Manila Observatory (1928-1941) as Chief of Seismology (beginning in 1928) and Chief of Terrestrial Magnetism (beginning in 1934). In December 1941, with the attack of the Philippines by Japanese forces, Fr. Repetti was confined to the Ateneo de Manila through July 1944 after which he was sent to Los Baños Internment Camp. There he was held until liberation by US forces in February 1945. Upon returning to the US, Fr. Repetti was a researcher and writer on the history of Jesuits in the Philippines at Georgetown University (1945-1947) and, after the death of Fr. Joseph Causey in November 1947, he became University Archivist and remained in that position until his death in 1966.
