John Corbett, SJ (1869-1942) was born to Thomas (1830-1912) and Marcella McGann (1838-1917) Corbett in Brooklyn. There he attended St. Peter’s Academy and then St. John’s College (1881-1884) before spending a year studying German grammar and literature in Sarnen (Switzerland, 1885). Fr. Corbett then began his priestly studies at the Canisianum in Innsbruck (Austria, 1886-1888) before returning to the US and entering the Society of Jesus (1888). He was stationed at Frederick (1888-1891), Woodstock (1892-1894, 1900-1903), and Georgetown University (1895-1899) and was ordained in 1901.
Fr. Corbett was then at St. Andrew-on-Hudson (1904) before taking his final vows in 1905. Thereafter he was a professor of Hebrew and sacred scripture at Woodstock (1905-1907); on the editorial staff of the Messenger of the Sacred Heart at Fordham (1909-1932); at the College of St. Francis Xavier (New York, 1933-1940); and at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola (Manhattan, 1941). Fr. Corbett died at St. Andrew-on-Hudson in 1942.
In 1901, Fr. Corbett was asked to write a piece for the Georgetown College Journal in celebration of Fr. Edward H. Welch’s Golden Jubilee. After Fr. Welch’s death in 1904, Fr. Corbett was also asked to develop a biography of the priest for the same publication. They had been stationed at Woodstock and Georgetown together, where Fr. Welch was spiritual prefect, between 1893 and 1899.
