The collection consists of the records of the Georgetown Ignatian Society and documents their efforts to have Georgetown University formally declared "un-Catholic" for their recognition of a pro-choice student group (GU Choice) and other offenses in the 1990s. It consists of their Petition to Cardinal Hickey, their Canon Law suits, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and anti-GU Choice buttons.
Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. For use of all manuscripts collections, researchers are advised to contact the Booth Family Center for Special Collections in advance of any visit.
Researchers are solely responsible for determining the copyright status of the materials being used, establishing who the copyright owner is, locating the copyright owner, and obtaining permission for intended use.
The Georgetown Ignation Society was a lay advocacy group was formed in response to Georgetown University officially recognizing a pro-choice student group (GU Choice) in 1991. According to an article by Claire Zeng, "over 1,500 Georgetown alumni, professors, and students filed a canon law petition asking Cardinal Hickey, then-Archbishop of Washington, to require Georgetown to comply with Catholic teachings or else be stripped of its Catholic identity." The collection included a large number of "Mandates of Procurator" signed by Georgetown University almuni, students, and the lay community. These documents contained personally identifing information and were removed from the collection for privacy purposes. The total number of mandates measured approximately 5 inches in height. Two redacted forms and one blank form were retained.
