Biographical / Historical

The Church of St. Francis Xavier (Manhattan, New York) was founded in 1851 and, after the original building was torn down in 1878, a new church was built between 1878 and 1882. Patrick F. Dealy, SJ (1827-1891), pastor from 1880-1882, helped finance the construction of this second structure in part through a fair held in the winter of 1880. In order to memorialize the occasion and simultaneously fundraise for the parish, Fr. Dealy facilitated the collection of autographs “from the most distinguished citizens of this country,” bound them in an album entitled “Century of Autographs,” and sold the resulting work “with the proceeds to be given for the benefit of the Church.”
