Biographical Note

Joseph A. Mulry (1889-1945) was born in New York City to Thomas M. Mulry, Jr. (1855-1916), and Mary E. Gallagher (1856-1934). He was the fourth of ten children, alongside siblings Parthenia Mary (1882-1910), Thomas G. A. (1883-1901), Margaret Mary (1885-1920), Francis X. (1890-1959), Aloysius “Louis” J. (1892-1963), Mary E. (1893-1972), Vincent de Paul (1895-1968), George A. (1896-1965), and James A. T. (1898-1977). Mulry graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School (New York City, 1906) before entering the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson (Poughkeepsie, 1906-1910). After his philosophy at Woodstock College (1911-1913) and regency at Fordham University (1913-1918) he completed his theology at Woodstock (1919-1922), where he was ordained in 1921.

Next Mulry was teaching at Canisius College (Buffalo, 1923) before having his tertianship at St. Andrew-on-Hudson (1924). He then spent the next two decades as a professor for the Ateneo de Manila (Philippines, 1924-1944), with a brief sabbatical back in the US in 1934. At the end of this period, because of the Japanese occupation, he and students of the Ateneo were forced to relocate to the Santa Ana retreat house where he was able to continue instruction. In summer 1943 he was imprisoned and interrogated by Japanese forces at Santiago military prison before later being transferred in July 1944 to Santo Tomas and subsequently Los Baños internment camps, where he died in January 1945.

His sister Margaret Mary married Charles Andrew Monagan (1872–1931) in 1911; they had a son, John S. Monagan (1911–2005), the donor of this collection and a recipient of several letters from Mulry.
