The Patrick J. Cormican, SJ Papers consist of poetry as well as materials related to Jeannie Gourley Struthers, an actor performing in Ford's Theater when President Lincoln was assassinated.
The Patrick J. Cormican, SJ Papers are on deposit at Georgetown University and are the property of the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus. As stewards of the Archives, the Georgetown University Library’s Booth Family Center for Special Collections is responsible for managing access to the material based on policies set forth by the USA East Province. Guidelines:
1. All Archives materials dated or bearing solely on events occurring before January 1, 1940, shall be open for review unless otherwise restricted, subject to Library policies and procedures.
2. All unpublished Archives materials dated or bearing solely on events occurring on or after January 1, 1940, shall be open for review upon request subject to a decision by the Provincial or someone designated by the Provincial.
3. Researchers may quote from the materials.
4. Researchers may take their own photographs of the material for scholarly and research purposes. Allowing photographs is not an authorization to publish or to deposit the material in another library or archive.
5. Written permission from the USA East Province is required for the publication of substantive portions of any material or publication-quality reproductions of any material.
6. Material not yet processed is not available to researchers; permission will not be granted to access any unprocessed material.
7. Audiovisual, microfilm and other material in the Archives, the original of which is held in another archive, may be consulted and transcribed only. Written permission from the archive holding the original material is required for any duplication, reproduction, or publication of that material.
8. Use the Permission Request Form to request permission (i) to access any restricted processed material or (ii) to publish reproductions or quote substantive portions of the material. Send the completed form by email to the Booth Family Center for Special Collections (speccoll@georgetown.edu).

Patrick J. Cormican (1858-1945) was born in Lurgan, County Galway, Ireland to parents Martin (1829-1911) and Anastasia Connolly Cormican (1837-1896). He completed his early education at an Irish national school before attending the diocesan seminary at St. Joseph's College, Garbally Park, Ballinasloe. Fr. Cormican immigrated to the US in 1878, briefly attending St. John’s College (Fordham) before entering the Society of Jesus at West Park (New York, 1880-1881). Thereafter, he was stationed at Frederick (1882-1883), Woodstock (1884-1886, 1892-1895), College of the Holy Cross (Worcester, 1887), the College of St. Francis Xavier (New York, 1888-1890), and Loyola College (Baltimore, 1891).
Fr. Cormican was ordained in 1894 before continuing to teach at Boston College (1896-1898, 1900-1901) and completing his probation at Ancienne Abbaye de Tronchiennes (Belgium, 1899). After taking final vows in 1901, he was at St. John’s College (1902-1905), Georgetown University (1906), Boston College (1907-1908), College of the Holy Cross (1909), the College of St. Francis Xavier (1910-1911), and Canisius College (Buffalo, 1912-1913, 1919-1920). Next Fr. Cormican was teaching at Canisius High School (1914, 1928-1929), Brooklyn College (1915-1918), St. John’s College (1921-1922), Georgetown University (1923-1925), and Woodstock (1926-1927). For the remainder of his life, he was assistant pastor of St. Anne’s Church (Buffalo, 1928-1945).

The typescripts in folders 2 and 4 were donated by Georgetown Visitation (2-27-1969) and the remainder of the collection is likely from Fr. Cormican's time as Georgetown University librarian (1923-1925).
