 File — Box: 42

Scope and Contents

58 pieces of correspondence from the papers of artist, sculptor, and founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood Thomas Woolner, the vast majority of which are letters to and from Woolner or his wife Alice Gertrude Woolner (neé Waugh). Correspondents are largely artists including painters Walter William Ouless (1848-1933) and Carl Haag (1820-1915), fellow pre-Raphaelite sculptor Henry Hugh Armstead (1828-1905), and Anglo-American author Henry James (1843-1916), but academics such as Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893), scientists including Darwin advocate Thomas Henry Huxly (1825-1895), and politicians like diplomat Sir Eyre Crowe (1864-1925) are also represented. A letter from an identified source, dated 1937, is also associated with the collection. The relationship between this letter and Thomas Woolner or his estate is unknown.
