Ernest A. Payne, 20th century
Scope and Contents
Approximately 20 items, mostly correspondence, belonging to British Baptist leader and scholar the Reverend Ernest A. Payne. The majority of the collection pertains to Payne’s interest in the British historian and novelist Edward John Thompson, including a number of letters from Thompson and his wife Theodosia, several letters from friends discussing Thompson’s work, and newspaper clippings containing reviews of his books. A curatorial file compiled by Scheetz is also included.

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Biographical / Historical
Ernest A. Payne (1902-1980) was a British Baptist leader and scholar. Early in his career he was interested in becoming a British Baptist Society missionary to India, and while this never materialized, he retained his interest in Indian history. Edward John Thompson (1886-1946) was a British novelist and historian of India best known for his fractious relationship with Rabindranath Tagore, on whom he wrote several books, and his work on translating Bengali literature into English. Thompson was an advocate for dominion status for India.
