Royal Rodney Ingersoll, 1900 - 1901
Scope and Contents
A large quarter-bound “onion skin” journal, containing approximately 50 typed letters to and from Rear Admiral Ingersoll of the US Navy, dated 1900-1. The majority are carbon copies of Ingersoll’s own letters printed into the journal itself, and the remainder are loose sheets with letters addressed to the Admiral. The spine of the volume is stamped “LETTERS” and the majority of the 502 leaves are blank.

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Biographical / Historical
Rear Admiral Royal Rodney Ingersoll (December 4, 1847-April 21, 1931) was a US Navy Officer whose military career spanned nearly five decades. Ingersoll was born in Niles, Michigan and graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1868. He served on various US naval ships until 1876 when he was assigned to the Naval Academy, where he spent most of his career teaching and writing on ordnance and ballistics. Despite retiring in 1909, Ingersoll was recalled to duty during the First World War, when he was President of the Naval Ordnance Board. After his war service he returned to his home state of Indiana where he lived until his death in 1931, age 83.
