RESTRICTED Ridge (4 of 4), 1951-1988
Scope and Contents
Letters to the Provincials David Nugent, William Maloney, and John Daley. Throughout, there is concern about jurisdictional boundaries between parishes and the tendency of Father McKenna to cross lines to serve Black parishioners. The letters dated before 1953 are primarily from Horace McKenna and Richard McSorley, concerning the segregation the parishes of Southern Maryland and their financial difficulties. Between September 1952 and the end of 1953, Father Nugent and William Maloney oversaw the reassignment of parish pastors and priests throughout Southern Maryland. The letters between 1953 and 1963 are far more business-like, including reports of the financial condition of the parishes. The file includes notice from the Provincial John Daley that they were leaving Southern Maryland in 1963. Includes program for 50th anniversary dedication of St. Peter Claver Church (published in 1988)
