This series is comprised of the papers [e.g., correspondence] of Francis Xavier Talbot, S.J., Editor of America Magazine (1936-1944). There are some folders, however, which contain items from the early 1930's, pre-dating his tenure as Editor; in such instances, these folders are generally comprised of materials dating from Father Talbot's tenure as America Magazine Literary Editor. Alphabetical correspondence files will be found to have a chronological [internal] folder arrangement [i.e., order] up to Box 30, after which its primary internal arrangement is alphabetical.

Container Summary

This folder consists of "S" correspondence (1938) of Francis X. Talbot, S.J., Editor of America Magazine (1936-1944). Items of interest include: an article (Mar. 27) entitled "Journalistic Ethics and Politics of the Managing Editor [Patrick F. Scanlan] of the Brooklyn Tablet." Other items of interest include: letter (May 2) from the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, the attachment to which provides a concise sketch of the history and function of the organization; letter (Sept. 7) from writer Upton Sinclair provides insight into self-image; letter (Oct. 15) has attached an article pertains to Mussolini and the new Italian anti-Jewish policy; letter (Nov. 28) has attachment [i.e., a letter] from the National Gentile League makes alleges a connection between U.S. Jews and Communism. Also included is a "Study of the Minimum Essentials [i.e., facts which every Catholic boy and girl were expected to know] in Religion."
