This series is comprised of the papers [e.g., correspondence] of Francis Xavier Talbot, S.J., Editor of America Magazine (1936-1944). There are some folders, however, which contain items from the early 1930's, pre-dating his tenure as Editor; in such instances, these folders are generally comprised of materials dating from Father Talbot's tenure as America Magazine Literary Editor. Alphabetical correspondence files will be found to have a chronological [internal] folder arrangement [i.e., order] up to Box 30, after which its primary internal arrangement is alphabetical.

Container Summary

This folder consists of the "O" Correspondence (1936) of Francis X. Talbot, S.J., Editor of America Magazine (1936-1944). Items of interest include: letter (May 18) has attached a newsclipping concerning Father Charles Coughlin being castigated for use of papal encyclicals; letter (Aug. 12) has an attachment which concerns news commentaries upon the Spanish Civil War; letter (Sept. 26) has attached a printed copy of an open letter of Arthur L. O'Leary to James A. Farley, Chairman of the Democratic State and National Committees. In the letter are allegations of Communism of David Dubinsky, one of President Roosevelt's 47 New York State Presidential Electors and New York Governor Herbert H. Lehman; letter to the Editor (ack'd 10-17) challenged moral injustice of the British towards the Arabs on the Palestine question; letter (Nov. 11) has attached a typescript which concerns the moral importance of a primary school education.
