Container Summary

1 ALS in French from Jan Philip Roothaan, S.J. in Rome to Albert Roothaan wishing that men would spend more time looking to heaven than at the earth, describing his chapel and the time of day when he says mass, asking Albert to pay a visit to Mr. le Cure Van der Lugt whose sermon at the turn of the century Jan Philip still remembered, expressing disappointment that the Jesuits in Amsterdam do not write him much more often ("La correspondence dans la Compie. est comme la circulation du sang dans le corps"), discussing the progress of Mr. de Wilde, expressing happiness that affairs of religion are "winning" in Holland and that his name is being used often in religious instruction there, expressing disappointment that he has not heard from Prof. David Van Lennep in more than two years, and asking Albert to thank Mr. J. G. Lesage ter Broek for a recent letter. "Sursum corda- Oui, toujours. Oh! Comme le monde irait mieux si tous les hommes regarderaient plus souvent en haut. Mais- la terre, et toujours la terre, et rien que les interets de la terre- voila ce qui fait le malheur du monde. Donc- oui- et de grand coeur, Sursum, sursum corda!"
