Content Description

Miscellaneous documents in Arabic script, late 18th to mid 19th century. A few show notes or calculations, but many contain prayers and a significant portion contain illustrated charts of national flags and other maritime signaling intelligence.

Unknown; in the University Archives prior to 1970. The BFCSC catalog describes these documents as the gift of Nicholas Cleary, almost certainly wrong. Some documents may be firman. These documents may be documents captured by Stephen Decatur from the ketch Mastico or the frigate Philadelphia during actions taken around Tripoli in 1803-04, or in subsequent actions in the Second Barbary War of 1815. Riggs IHS stamps.
