Scope and Contents

This book and the two that follow include letters written by Father Richards to the Maryland Provincial and other Province officials and to the Rector General of the Jesuit Order in Rome (letters to the General are in Latin.)

No index is present. Letters to the Maryland Provincial and Socius relate mainly to curricular issues and personnel assignments, for example: dated November 16, 1888 asking permission for Father Patrick Healy to come to Georgetown and stay until after the Centennial or later - “His social influence would be enormously beneficial to us. Of, course, he could not be counted as a man in the corps of teachers etc. for he could do absolutely no work, as I am informed, but socially he would be a power.”; dated December 12, 1888 stating that the Law School can purchase the property they desire and build a building on it and referencing reasons for naming Francis Barnum as Riggs Librarian; dated January 31, 1889 referencing the finances of the Law School; dated April 8, 1889 referencing work on Gaston Hall; dated May 6, 1889 listing the duties of Father Francis Barnum; dated May 15, 1889 referencing the arrival of a blacksmith, much needed because “among other things the roofs of the hall and library in the new building . . . let through water in floods”; dated July 11, 1889 referencing the possible sale of lots next to the Trinity Residence; dated March 22, 1890 referencing the abolition of all classes below First Grammar; March 29, 1890 referencing two possible sites for the Law School; dated November 22, 1891 and following referencing the gift of John Vinton Dahlgren and Elizabeth Dahlgren for a students’ chapel and the development of plans for it.

Letters to parents explaining the circumstances under which their sons have been expelled are also present, as are letters to Father Patrick Healy.
