Scope and Contents
Starting in December 1891, some of the copy letters are typed. Among those listed in the alphabetical name index at the front of the volume are Adams Express Company, Charles J. Bonaparte, Chesapeake Potomac Telephone Company, Chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering, P.F. Collier, Curator of the Corcoran Art Gallery, John Vinton Dahlgren, Father John Doonan, Bishop James A. Healy, Father Patrick Healy, Professor. E. Kidwell of Department of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Mining School; G.L. Magruder, Manila Observatory, J. Fairfax McLaughlin, Chief of Ordnance, Paul Pelz, Port Master of Georgetown, Captain William T. Russell, James R. Ryder, E. Francis Riggs, Sophie Shea (Mrs. John Gilmary Shea), Voigt Manufacturing Company, Wilson Laundry Machinery Company, and West End National Bank.
Included are letters to: the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company dated September 3, 1890 requesting that the President’s telephone be moved; Prof. E. Kidwell of Department of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Mining School dated December 19, 1891 in which Father Richards references a “great effort to secure the money needed for the science building”; Benzinger Brothers and Company dated June 8, 1892 relating to stained glass windows for Dahlgren Chapel; Father James A. Doonan at Boston College dated June 14, 1894 which references the success of the post-graduate course (Graduate School) and the issue of whether 1789 is the appropriate year to use as the date of the founding of the College - the issue of the founding date is also raised in a letter to Father Patrick F. Healy of the same date; Frank H. Jones, 509 6th Street, N.W., dated June 16, 1892 agreeing to the request that Mr. Jones’ tenants in the house at 504 E. Street, N.W. be allowed to “pass over a strip of our pavement . . . in getting in and out of the house”; Paul Pelz dated December 1, 23 and 24, 1891 and January 15, 1892 referencing the finishing of the Alumni Hall [Gaston Hall]; and Captain William T. Rossell, Engineer Commissioner of the District of Columbia, dated January 2, 1892 referencing “the defective water supply available by our college in case of fire.”
