Scope and Contents

Among those listed in the alphabetical name index at the front of the volume are John Agar, the College Cadets, Superioress of S. Joseph’s Orphanage Sister Euphrasia, James Cardinal Gibbons, Gaston Hall, James Hoban, Bishop James A. Healy, E. Carroll Morgan, Riggs and Company, Thomas J. Semmes, and the U.S. Electric Light Company.

Included are letters to: Messrs. J.G. Proud and Sons, Baltimore dated May 20, 1889 referencing a fire in the North Building [Old North]; Mr. Hamilton dated July 17, 1889 referencing work on Gaston Hall; Colonel Eliott, U.S. Engineer in Charge of Washington Aqueduct, dated October 9, 1889 referencing the possible creation of a road through campus to replace a road closed by the Engineers and allow an outlet to Mr. Fowler and his neighbors; Colonel J. Wilson, Marlborough, Maryland thanking him for the gift of a mantel from John Carroll’s birthplace; and Mr. Sands dated October 23, 1889 reporting that Miss Ellen Whelan has offered to fund the completion of the Observatory and the purchase of a larger telescope as a memorial to Father James Curley. Also present, letters dated May 8 and 9, June 16 and September 1889 relating to the impact on local residents of a proposed extension of Prospect Street near 37th Street, letter dated June 10, 1889 enclosing a $162.90 contribution to relief efforts for the Johnstown flood, and letters dated May 6 and May 19, 1889 relating to the design of the Kidwell Medal.
