The work is subtitled "Duo pour Soprano et Contralto avec accompt de Piano, Violons, Altos, Violoncelle et ContraBasses et deux Cors." Credits given in Gounod's hand: "Poésie de Racine (Choeurs d'Athalie). Musique de Ch. Gounod". At the top of the title page is the inscription: "A mes amies Marie Thérèse de Ségur et Marie de Goulaine." Toward the foot of the page Gounod wrote: "Ce manuscrit appartient à Marie de Goulaine. Ch. Gounod"
