Charles Murray Foster World War II Letters

Scope and Contents

Collection of 380 letters written by Lt. Charles Murray Foster to his family while he served in the 1st Battalion of the 114th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army during World War II. It includes letters written when he was stateside (1942-1944) and while in France (1944-1945). 25 letters feature sketches by Foster, usually depicting other soldiers and scenes he observed while serving in France (collected in Binder 4).

Hildred Roach Collection on Pan African Composers

It includes music scores from a variety of Black composers, Hildred Roach concert programs, and music recordings (phonograph records, compact discs, and open reel). Found in Notes:  The founder of Group 3 (which played works of Pan African composers in the 1960s-80s), a member of Alpha Kappa, and Phi Beta Kappa, she earned scholarships from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, John Hay Whitney, the Ford Foundation, Yale and Fisk, etc.; she is listed in Eileen Southern’s Dictionary of African and Afro-American Musicians, Who’s Who of American Women and Outstanding Educators of the South.
