Found in Notes:  Stevens was born on April 25, 1853 near West Gardiner, Maine, the son of John Smith Stevens and Harriet Leslie French. He was raised on a small farm and attended local schools.

Found in Notes:  His father, Michael Morris Healy, was a plantation owner and slaveholder; his mother, Eliza Smith, was enslaved by Healy.
