Found in Notes:  Agustin de Iturbide (1783-1824) was born in Valladolid (now Morelia), Mexico, the child of Spanish parents who had come to Mexico shortly before his birth. After the death of his father in 1798, Iturbide entered the military as a sub-lieutenant.

Shusaku Endo papers

Scope and Content note

The Shusaku Endo papers include manuscript drafts of Endo's novels "The Samurai" and "Scandal," a short story draft, and an as-yet unidentified draft. Evident in the manuscripts are Endo's corrections and notations, the additions and revisions he occasionally taped to existing manuscripts, and the work of his secretary to transcribe a clean version of the draft for later review.

Found in Notes:  To remedy this "public cynicism" it was recommended that a commission be set up to study campaign conduct, report the facts, and recommend standards of responsibility for election campaigns.

Shortly before the 1954 Congressional elections, a group of "eminent members of both parties" came together to constitute the Fair Campaign Practices Committee under the leadership of Anna Lord Strauss of New York who became president of the League of Women Voters in the mid-1960s.

Thomas Merton - John Pauker Collection

The Merton-Pauker Collection consists mainly of correspondence between Merton and Pauker and between Pauker and those interested in buying Merton's prints. There are seven personal letters from Merton and three mimeographed letters which Merton sent out to friends at Lent, Easter, and Christmas, 1967. Many of the letters also discuss Pauker's work as a poet, especially "Excellency," a sequence of poems, published in 1967.
