Found in Notes:  Born in Louisiana, King’s works focus on Southern history, especially the place and experience of women. Her first short story, "Monsieur Motte," was published anonymously in 1886, after which King began writing short stories for Harper's Magazine, followed by a variety of histories and novels focused on life in Louisiana during the colonial and Reconstruction eras, including a novel-length version of Motte (1888).
