The Walter Shewring Papers is a small collection of letters, essays and manuscripts by Shewring. The most notable item is the full autograph manuscript of Shewring's translation of Homer's "Odyssey," published by the Oxford University Press (1980). The collection includes some correspondence and printed articles by such distinguished acquaintances as Walter de la Mare, Eric Gill, David Jones, and Arthur Waley.

Found in Notes:  Expresses concerns about various rumours and gossip about him: "My dear Brother - I find that the news paper rumor (started by someone desirous of injuring me) that I am mustered out of service, is not true - and should I deserve it I presume I may be put on duty again." Continues: "Now for a word of advice in a domestic matter - My enemies have made much use of the fact that my wife is a secessionist and related to their officers she could not resist the temptation of associating with those of similar ideas - and - all I could say only made her the more persistent - so that I concluded if I was to be bandied about subordinate places on account of my connection with secessionists I had better resign at once for my usefulness was marred if not destroyed by my unfortunate connection.

"They are putting my name down in the list for Brigadier." Collection-level Scope and Content Note From the Collection: The Paraguayan Jesuits Collection consists of 20 manuscript and 4 printed documents ranging in date from 1639 to about 1744. A number of the manuscripts deal with the employment of Indian laborers from the Jesuit 'reductions' on the fortification of the ports of Buenos Aires; others touch on the incursions of hostile Indians against the reductions. A major emphasis of the collection, however, is on the continuing struggle between the Jesuits and the antagonistic representatives of the Church...

Found in Notes:  Seven of the documents are by Joseph de Rivarosa Lugar, and two are by Adrian de Esquivel, but documents are often signed by more than one person. The series was put together by the Protector General de los Indios, probably Pedro de Villanueva, and was presented to the Cabildo (Council) of Corrientes.
