Alexander Ward Papers

Scope and Contents The Alexander Ward Papers comprise fifteen autograph diaries of Alexander Ward from 1870 to 1889. The diaries begin while Ward is eighteen and trace his development from a wealthy youth working part-time in a factory to a wealthy land owner doing local magistracy work. The diaries offer us an interesting perspective on the day to day life of a country squire during his early years before his marriage in 1895. The entries are written in a "matter-of-fact" style, often with little commentary....

Found in Notes:  Ward also made three trips to the Continent to France, Germany, and Switzerland, mostly to help his rheumatism by attending the Baths in each place.

Cornelius Van H. Engert Papers 2

The Cornelius Van H. Engert papers 2 comprise a portion of the personal papers of Cornelius Van H. Engert, a U.S. diplomat who served in a number of important diplomatic posts. The collection includes correspondence, diplomatic memos, printed materials, speeches, and photographs.

Dates: 1887 - 1985
Found in Notes:  In January 1937, Engert was named Consul for the legations in Teheran and Kabul, and in August 1940 he was posted as Consul General in Beirut and Damascus where he was serving during the invasion of the forces of France Libre. In 1942, Engert became the first American Minister to reside in Kabul, Afghanistan, where he served until 1945.

James Percy Brown Journal

Thomas F. Mulledy, SJ Papers

Scope and Contents This collection consists of papers documenting the spiritual ministry and correspondence of Thomas Mulledy from the time of his entry in the Society of Jesus in 1815 until his death in 1860. The papers include sermons, 1829-1860; discourses, exercises, instructions, and lectures, 1834-1860; mass intentions, 1824-1860; and verses, 1817-1859. They also include two manuscripts: "Liber Manualis Sacerdotum" ("Priest's Manual"), 1815-1828, and "Vade Mecum" ("Go With Me"), 1815-1822....

Found in Notes:  The Superior General assigned Mulledy to work with the English-speaking community in Nice, France. By November 1843, Mulledy returned to the US to become the first president of Holy Cross College in Worcester (Mass.).
