Joseph A. Mulry, SJ Collection

Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence from Joseph A. Mulry, SJ to his nephew and niece as well as Advent conferences given while interned in Los Baños, Philippines. Also included are writings regarding his social action work in Manila and correspondence/reminiscences of Mulry after his death in 1945. Further, there are postcards of Philippine scenes collected by Mulry and several photographs of the priest.

Found in Notes:  He then spent the next two decades as a professor for the Ateneo de Manila (Philippines, 1924-1944), with a brief sabbatical back in the US in 1934.

Collection-level Scope and Content Note The material in this collection reflects the consultation Michel Chevalier was requesting from a Minister, probably in Paris or a nearby capital, as to how he should approach Chamorro. This Minister was probably a Central American diplomat in Europe, possibly Peralta. The letter which Chevalier eventually sent to Chamorro is also in the collection. It seems clear that Chevalier's claims were so weak by the time of this correspondence that he would not receive his concession, which was...

The Barnes Collection is the photographic morgue file of the Barnes Company, which specialized in the production of albums reproducing the faces and giving capsule biographies of members of Congress during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The collection includes 501 imperial carte de visite photographs, principally of members of Congress from 1872 to 1876, many of the photographs being embellished by added signatures trimmed from letters or other documents.

Found in Notes:  During Swan's time there (1929-1941) she created the portrait bust of Teilhard de Chardin, now at the Museum of Natural History in Paris; and a reconstruction (nicknamed "Nelly" by Teilhard) of one of the skulls of sinanthropus, the "Peking Man," under the supervision of Franz Weidenreich, German anatomist and paleoanthropologist.
