Scope and Contents John Grassi (1775-1849) was born in Rome and entered the Society of Jesus in Russia (1799). Because of his mathematical and scientific skills, Jesuit leaders selected Grassi to travel to China to evangelize its leaders. After this he was sent to Georgetown College where he was provincial and president of the school (1812-1817).
