Hermann Blumensaat (1845-1901) was born in Lippstadt, Westphalia and immigrated to the US in 1866. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1874 at Sault-au-Recollect, was ordained in 1882, and became assistant pastor at St. Joseph's (German) Church in New York City (1882-1886). Later he was stationed at the almshouse/workhouse on Blackwell's Island (1887-1901). His work there was interrupted by a cholera epidemic in 1892, during which time he stayed at Swinburne Island and ministered quarantined...
