Leonard Neale (1746-1817) was born near Port Tobacco and was educated in Europe where he entered the Society of Jesus in 1767. Neale then became a missionary in Guyana in 1779, spending four years there and returning to Maryland in 1783. He was at White Marsh (1783-1793) before becoming pastor of Old St. Joseph's and Old St. Mary's (Philadelphia) as well as vicar general for Philadelphia and the northern states.
