Scope and Contents

The Thomas A. Hughes, SJ Papers consist of unpublished drafts for a proposed third volume of A History of the Society of Jesus in North America, Colonial and Federal covering 1773 to 1829. Also included is a report by Fr. Hughes entitled "de abusibus" ("on abuses"), in which he discusses Jesuit issues with modernism and worldly affairs discovered throughout his research, as well as correspondence related to his research.

Found in Notes:  Alongside these two volumes of narrative he also produced a set of documents: v. 1 part 1 #1-140 (1907) and v. 1 part 2 #141-224 (1910) that were intended to illustrate the aforementioned texts beginning in 1605 as well as future volumes up to the year 1838.

Found in Notes:  Mercier's great interest in the philosophy of education probably had its beginnings during the period 1906-10, as a French teacher at the Francis Parker School in Chicago.

This collection contains economics papers and teaching material; spiritual writings such as retreat notes, sermons, and missions; correspondence and photographs; and biographical information on Joseph Zrinyi, SJ.

Found in Notes:  His tertianship took place in Wepion (Belgium, 1949-1950) and, after a brief period in Bad Godesburg (West Germany, July-October 1950), he was assigned as assistant pastor to a Hungarian church in Montreal (1950-1953) where he also completed an MA in Industrial Relations at the University of Montreal (1951-1953). Beginning in the fall of 1953 Zrinyi led retreats and missions to Hungarian communities across the US and Canada, based in Buffalo until 1956 and later in Cleveland until 1958.

Found in Notes:  In September 1923, Engert began eight years of service in Latin American countries, beginning with Cuba, where he served as First Secretary until February 1925.
