A set of bound notes derived from scholarly lectures on a variety of mathematical and scientific topics--such as trigonometry, algebra, geometry, and physics--written down by Fr. Henry Neale, likely while pursuing studies at Liège in the 1720s and 1730s. Of note are numerous fold-out illustrations.

Found in Notes:  Joseph Greaton at Old St. Joseph's Church beginning in 1741. Neale chose Lancaster as a promising center for future missions and purchased two lots of land in 1742; later, in 1747, he also secured land for Goshenhoppen.

Found in Notes:  The publication in 1887 of the Deemster, a story set in the Isle of Man, marked the beginning of his extraordinary popularity. From 1892 to 1893 Hall Caine visited Poland and the frontier towns of Russia at the request of the Russo-Jewish Committee in order to investigate the facts of Jewish persecutions, and in 1895 he was sent on behalf of the Incorporated Society of Authors and the Colonial Office to Canada where he conducted successful negotiations with the Dominion government on the subject of Canadian Copyright.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the personal papers of William Harding Jackson. Correspondents include President Eisenhower, Constantine FitzGibbon, Arthur Gardner, Gordon Gray, and Richard M. Nixon, among others. A run of letters regarding Wendell Willkie's 1940 presidential campaign is also included among the documents. Some typed manuscripts by Jackson, a few photographs of him, and a series of printed materials round out the collection.

Found in Notes:  The 5th Infantry was next assigned to the American Army of Occupation in Germany where Kelley spent a year In Andernach as liaison officer between the Army of Occupation and local civil authorities.

At the beginning of 1920, Kelley was detailed as assistant military attaché to Denmark and Finland; and as military observer in the Baltic Provinces.

Collection-level Scope and Contents note The Isaiah Garrett, Jr. Letters is comprised of 41 autograph letters written by Isaiah Garrett Jr. between February 19th, 1859 and December 14th, 1865. Twenty-five of the letters are addressed to his older brother, Frank, fifteen are addressed to his parents, and one is addressed to his sister, Sarah. Thirty-seven of the forty-one letters were written while Garrett was a student at Georgetown University on the eve of the American Civil War, one was written in Baton Rogue, LA in 1859, two...

Found in Notes:  After marrying Narcissa Grayson, a member of a prominent area family, in 1836, Garrett settled into work and family life, the couple raising five children (six others died before the age of six) while he built his reputation, serving as district attorney, an important member of the state constitutional convention in 1845, and as a co-operationist member of the secession convention in 1861, all the while handling important legal cases in his area and beginning another life as a planter, establishing "Lindwood," a large plantation on the river south of Monroe in the early 1850s.

This collection consists of 18 Fr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin essays and publications as collected by Marie Terese Dubalen as well as one piece on Teilhard written by Bruno de Solages (folder 11).

Found in Notes:  Returning to France at the end of WWII, he continued this work although forbidden by Rome to give public lectures or publish philosophical works beginning in 1924. After comments made at the Cercle des Intellectueles Catholiques in 1947, Teilhard de Chardin was silenced on all philosophical topics by the Jesuit Superior General so that he would not be condemned by Rome.

Hilaire Belloc - Elizabeth Greenhill collection

John S. Monagan - Anthony Powell Collection 1

This collection contains over two decades of correspondence between writer Anthony Powell and his American friend John S. Monagan as well as various magazine and newspaper articles relating to Powell as collected by Monagan. Also within the collection are numerous photographs of Anthony and Violet Powell at their home, the Chantry in Somerset, England, mostly taken by Monagan during visits made with his wife Rosemary in 1981, 1987, and 1988.

Scope and Contents The Lester Bernstein Papers consist of a diary written by Bernstein from July 21 to December 31 1899, part of the period in which he worked for the Isthmian Canal Commission (ICC). Scope and Contents

Beginning no later than his tertianship, Fr. Richard C. Law regularly performed in barbershop quartets and choirs at various campus and Jesuit community events, including minstrel shows, golden jubilees, and final vow celebrations. This collection contains sheet music and lyrics used for such performances, many of which were personalized for individual Jesuits, as well as one poem from before he joined the Society of Jesus.
