Yemeni Haggadah Manuscript

Scope and Contents A bound manuscript on paper of the 18th or 19th century containing a Passover Haggadah of the Yemeni rite, with liturgy in Hebrew and instruction in Judeo-Arabic. The text is somewhat condensed, and contains a high number of abbreviations in the Hebrew. Catchwords are present throughout, including on the final page, suggesting that the volume may be incomplete -- though the last prayer recorded here, the Nishmat, is usually found at the conclusion of the Passover seder or ceremonial meal....

Found in Notes:  Text in black ink with decoration and rubrication in red, including a highly decorative border at the beginning. The paper quality is mixed and there is significant staining and other damage throughout, though legibility is not compromised.

Found in Notes:  Following the death of her son Tanguy Tolila-Croissant, Adrienne Croissant--a graduate in philosophy and anthropology--eventually called upon Teilhard's spiritual support beginning in 1946. Her son Tanguy had been a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris who joined the Organisation civile et militaire (OCM) in 1943.

The major portion of the correspondence from Edith Sitwell to composer Humphrey Searle (1915-1982) refers to their collaboration on setting some of Sitwell's works to music by Searle. The collection includes correspondence from Sitwell's brothers, Sir Osbert Sitwell and Sacheverell Sitwell, as well as from Cecil Gray.

Found in Notes:  Fitzgerald served as mayor of Alexandria from 1786 to 1787. Beginning in 1788, he helped to establish St.Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria.

Tomás Herrán Papers

Scope and Contents

The Tomas Herran papers contain correspondence, cables, letter books, and related material dealing primarily with Colombian-U.S. relations in the period leading up to and just after the negotiation of the Hay-Herran Treaty (1903). The documents also concern Herran's duties as minister to the United States. Printed material deals largely with the Panama Canal and the Hay-Herran Treaty. Dates: 1794 - 1906; Majority of material found within 1863 - 1898
Found in Notes:  Herran served as Consul in Hamburg, Germany beginning in 1892. In 1900, he became secretary of the Colombian embassy in Washington, D.C.

Alexander Ward Papers

Scope and Contents The Alexander Ward Papers comprise fifteen autograph diaries of Alexander Ward from 1870 to 1889. The diaries begin while Ward is eighteen and trace his development from a wealthy youth working part-time in a factory to a wealthy land owner doing local magistracy work. The diaries offer us an interesting perspective on the day to day life of a country squire during his early years before his marriage in 1895.
