This diary includes descriptions of meetings with Black parishioners and the events leading to the foundation of St. Alphonsus parochial school and Cardinal Gibbons Institute, Ridge. John Hall (1664-1703) entered the Society of Jesus in 1683. He was stationed at St. Thomas Manor as procurator of the Maryland Mission (1693-1698) and died at Ghent in 1703. This folder contains a bound manuscript with "from St. Inigoes" and "G. T. College" on flyleaves and notes on logic written within.
Basil Pacciarini (1816-1884) was born in Montone (Perugia), Italy, and entered the Society of Jesus there in 1834. In 1846 he traveled to the US and, after missionary work in Maine, he was stationed in Boston and Philadelphia before being at St. Inigoes for twenty years. He was transferred to Fordham in 1882 where he died in 1884. This folder includes a farewell letter (draft) from Paccarini to the St. Joseph's and Mechanicsville parishes before leaving for New York (1882).
Dennis Ryan (1828-1846) was born in County Limerick, Ireland, and entered the Society of Jesus at Frederick in 1844. He died shortly after in 1846 at Georgetown College. This folder includes a bound notebook containing "Rhetoricae Elementa" and "Compositions: The Influence of Moral Character," written while at St. John's Literary Institution (now known as St. John's Catholic Prep) in Buckeystown, Maryland (1843-1844).
James J. Tehan (1826-1879) was assistant pastor at St. Joseph's (Providence) 1877-1879 and was followed by pastor William B. Cleary (1837-1884) there 1879-1884. This folder includes a journal kept by Tehan that records his ministry at Rainsford Island (Boston) on 4-25 and 4-26-1877 as well as at St. Joseph's Church (Providence) 5-2/-1877 -- 10-26-1879. The diary was continued by Cleary 10-28-1879 -- 6-29-1881.
