Biographical Note
Loretta M. Kopelman, Ph.D. was founding president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, President of the Society for Health and Human Values and a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Research with Children. She was the winner of the 2007 William G. Bartholome Award for Ethical Excellence from The American Academy of Pediatrics. She is a Fellow of the Hastings Center and Faculty Affiliate and Fellow of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. Currently she is a Professor of the Practice of Family Medicine, bioethics track, Georgetown University School of Medicine and Professor Emeritus at Brody School of Medicine, where she founded and chaired its Department of Bioethics and International Studies from 1978 to 2005. She twice was a member of the American Philosophical Association, Committee on Philosophy and Medicine and has served on many editorial boards. She was on the advisory board at the FDA and co-chaired the NIH Committee on Growth Hormone. She has published widely, including topics in bioethics, philosophy and medicine, research policy, the rights of research subjects, the fair allocation of health resources, and the Best Interest Standard. Her writings on these topics have often focused on the rights and welfare of minors.
